QUT and its predecessor institutions have benefited from the generosity of industry and the community for many years. This significant support has helped build QUT's reputation as a world-class institution through the establishment of research programs, academic positions, facilities, services and scholarships. Since 1976, when official recording of gifts commenced, QUT has received more than $78 million in gifts and gifts in-kind to support these activities.
The QUT Art Collection is one of the earliest examples of philanthropic giving to the University and its predecessor institutions. In 1945, an Art and Craft Fund was established at the Queensland Teachers' Training College to held acquire significant artworks. Many students and staff contributed a 'tuppence' to this Fund each payday. Today, the QUT Art Collection is one of the largest public art collections in Queensland.
Other QUT activities and facilities that have been established with support from the community include:
- QUT Student Guild Aquatic and Squash Centre
- QUT Art Museum
- Gardens Theatre
- Endowed student scholarships and bursaries
- Equipment to support eye research
