QUT accepted responsibility for the restoration, adaptation and future maintenance of Old Government House in 2002. This move heralded the end of 20 years negotiation by QUT for usage of the House, and is welcomed as the first step along the road to the inclusion of Old Government House as part of the QUT community.
The House is situated at QUT's Gardens Point campus, located in the heart of Brisbane, on the Brisbane River and adjacent to the City Botanic Gardens and Parliament House.
Old Government House is unique, as the only purpose built Government House in Queensland and as a rare surviving example of domestic work of the Colonial Architect, Charles Tiffin. More importantly, it demonstrates the evolution of government and higher education in Queensland and was the first major project completed by the newly formed colony of Queensland in 1860.
QUT has committed substantial cash and in-kind support to the restoration and ongoing maintenance of this historical landmark and is seeking support from the community to help restore Old Government House to its former glory.
In 2005, the University undertook to run a major capital campaign to raise $AUD13.5 million to ensure that the major public spaces in the House are restored and subsequently put to use in a manner that recognises its cultural significance.
Support is being sought from individuals, organisations and trusts and foundations for the refurbishment of the interior of the Ground Floor and First floors. Naming rights opportunities for particular rooms and areas will be available where appropriate.
