'Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present'
Albert Camus

What is a bequest?

A bequest is a gift made in a Will for an identified purpose. At QUT, bequests are received by the University to ensure excellence in teaching, research and community service.

What bequests can achieve at QUT

QUT has already received bequests, which have significantly enhanced teaching and research at the University. Projects at QUT which have been supported by bequests include:

  • Brian May Piano, music scores and equipment from the Estate of the Late Brian May
Brian May was regarded as Australia's finest screen composer. His gift provides a lasting legacy for his love of music and a great opportunity for young aspiring music students to enjoy these gifts.
  • The Selby Resource Collection on Sustainable Development
A library collection (print & electronic) in the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering made possible by the Estate of Mr Peter Charles Selby.
  • Optometry research gift from the Estate of the Late Hilda Gladys Goldfinch
Mrs Goldfinch's interest in eye research illustrated her values and shares with the community her generosity.
  • Arbovirus research in the Faculty of Science from the Estate of Mrs Dorothy Cook
This research focuses on investigating and seeking cures for mosquito-borne diseases such as Ross River Virus, Dengue Fever and so on.
  • Development of the QUT Art Collection through artworks gifted from the Estate of Mr Bashir Baraki.
  • Koala Research in the Faculty of Science from the Estate of Mrs Ruth Oulton Whyte
Mrs Whyte's bequest has funded a PhD scholarship to research the impact of the chlamydia disease on koala populations in Australia.

For further information on the above bequests and the overall QUT Bequest Program, please refer to the Turning Points brochure (PDF file, 6.2 Mb).

What is an endowment?

Bequests for the QUT Endowment enable the University to meet urgent demands.

Bequests for general or unrestricted purposes will be added to QUT's General Endowment. The Endowment is an invested permanent fund to support University priorities. These kinds of bequests give QUT income and capital from which to meet urgent demands.

Examples of the purposes which the General Endowment funds include:

  • allocating funds to students scholarship schemes
  • purchasing equipment for lecture theatres and classrooms
  • upgrading equipment and technology
  • refurbishing buildings and other campus facilities.

Supporting the University through a gift in your Will could make a world of difference. For information on how to support QUT in your will, please refer to the Will Wording document.

Imagine how much we could achieve with your help.
